Grocery Store Meat Got You Down? Here’s My Frozen Fix.
Let’s be a little honest here: sometimes grocery shopping can be very tedious. Sometimes you’re searching for a variety of quality meat & seafood in those glass cases, and let’s face it: that requires trips to multiple stores.
One day, I came across an advertisement for truLOCAL, which describes itself as a simple monthly meat delivery service.
Did it live up to my desire for top-notch meat & fish varieties I can’t find during my regular grocery run? It’s time for a deep dive…
Locally Sourced Meat & Fish Straight To You
truLOCAL connects consumers straight to meat and fish sources by delivering the goods straight to your door. I was surprised at how easy the process was, and now I get high-quality products without the trips to the store.
I also really liked that their website provided details about who sourced the specific meats, which helped me see that they work with plenty of sustainable and organic suppliers. You’ll be able to fine-tune your free delivery based on how many people you’re feeding (1-6), three different box sizes, and how frequently you want deliveries.
- The Starter box costs $135
- The Family box costs $259
- The Mega box costs $329 (prices are in CAD).
Although this all sounds like a no-brainer, I was skeptical that it was genuinely fresh, even if it’s insulated. So, how did the delivery hold up?
When I opened my box, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the locally sourced meats were still frozen due to the dry ice and the care that truLOCAL took in packaging the box. You could definitely tell it was a step above grocery store offerings.
The Taste Blew Me Away
When I cooked my first meal, which was a juicy piece of salmon, I was impressed by the quality. Despite having been frozen, it thawed quickly and it tasted like high-quality, fresh fish should.
It truly was the best piece of salmon I’ve had to date.
I broiled it in the oven and served it on a fluffy bed of rice with grilled asparagus. With truLOCAL, you can pick different plans depending on the number of mouths you have to feed, too.
truLOCAL has some other seriously delicious offerings on deck – they have everything from Korean BBQ jerky and wild-caught fish to pork side ribs and even buffalo burgers, which makes putting food on the table a breeze. The bacon wrapped wild scallops caught my eye: brush the cooked scallops with some melted garlic butter for an elevated weekday meal. It doesn’t get easier (or tastier!) than this.
My Final Verdict – I’m a truLOCAL Lifer!
I have to admit that I was skeptical of truLOCAL up until the first (cooked) bite I took from the delicious salmon I made the first night. Not only was it super fresh, but it’s a huge win to know you’re supporting local, ethical suppliers – there’s no question marks about what you’re getting with your truLOCAL delivery. If you want fresher, locally sourced meat and fish without having to step foot outside your home, truLOCAL is your one-stop shop!
